Started in 2003 the XChannel is a mostly german speaking IRC network. Initially started to enable real-time communication for a webforum community the first #xchannel in QuakeNet quickly grew beyond the single chat room.
Since 2005 the network is mostly maintained by the Frubar team. A custom server software based on ircu called "w0nko" was developed as well as the irc service "Xevres" to help with channel management. Among the new added features are support for TLS encrypted connections and channels with unicode names.
